Audition Materials (Grades 7-12)

Students auditioning for Epic and/or Free Verse must choose one of the following melodies to prepare and perform alone without accompaniment.
 
The Director is Listening For

​

  • Does the singer move cleanly from pitch to pitch without scooping or sliding?

  • Does the singer pace their breath to make musical phrases?

  • Does the singer use beautiful choral vowel shapes?

  • Does the singer use expressive diction, making the text clear to the listener?

Sight Reading

​Sight reading is only required to audition for Free Verse.

​

The director will give the singer an eight-measure exercise and establish the key. The singer then has 30 seconds to study the exercise before performing it to the best of their ability. 

​

Singers are encouraged to use solfege, but may use whichever system they are accustomed to.
